Electrostatic air filters are great to have in a home where someone has allergies or asthma, in fact they will help in case of any bronchial or respiratory disease. These filters work by charging the dust particles in the air with electricity which will attract them to the metal plates on the filter where they stick until they are wiped clean.

If the room has six cubic feet of air, you should use an air filter that filters seven or eight cubic feet per hour.
These filters are not fans, though they blow the clean air away from them. If you will be leaving an open window in the same room mentioned above you should add a couple more cubic feet of air to the filter to make sure that all the circulating air is getting cleaned. These filters should be used in small places where the air flow or air exchange with the outside is controlled or limited.
How do you know it is working?
It is important to dust the room before setting up the filter. If you do not clean the room the dust which has settled on the walls and furniture will stay there and will continue affecting the person with respiratory problems. The electrostatic air filter takes dust and allegens out of the air, not surfaces where it has already settled on. It is recommended that the room where the allergic or asthmatic person sleeps should be cleaned and dusted thoroughly before installing the filter.
Once the room has been dusted and vacuumed; the filter will take care of any additional particles that float in the air. You can tell the filter is working when you look at a beam of light inside the room and there are no little particles floating inside of it. You will also see the dust sticking to the filter element immediately upon starting the electrostatic air filter.
